The music of Alan Tam is an enduring classic in the history of Cantonese pop music. On 6 and 7 June 2025, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra will present 'Treasured Tonight', a concert of his timeless songs at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall. Due to popular demand, an additional performance has been added on Saturday, 7 June at 3pm, with tickets going on sale on 25 April via URBTIX.
Conducted by the orchestra's Associate Artistic Director and Permanent Conductor, Chew Hee-Chiat, the concert will feature a range of Tam's classic songs performed by a group of musicians in the traditional Chinese music style. As a highlight of the 'Hong Kong Pop Culture Festival 2025', the concert will also include a number of songs performed with Tam's original vocals, accompanied by the live orchestra. Large screens will showcase rare footage of Tam's performances, allowing fans to relive the timeless charm of this legendary singer through moving melodies and nostalgic visuals.
A cross-temporal dialogue between original vocals and Chinese music
In a groundbreaking move, the concert will seamlessly blend Tam's original vocals with the live performance of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. When the familiar melodies of songs like 'I Only Care for You', 'Deeply in Love with You', 'A Lifetime's Desire', and 'A Few Minutes' Date' fill the hall, Tam's distinctive voice will intertwine with the unique timbres of Chinese instruments, offering a novel yet familiar auditory experience and a unique cultural journey into the world of Alan Tam.
Cross-disciplinary collaboration showcases musical creativity
Moreover, young harmonica player Ho Cheuk-yin will join the orchestra's erhu principal player, Dong Xiaolu, in a duo performance of the suite 'Yearning and Hope' on chromatic harmonica and recycled erhu. They will present rearranged versions of songs like 'Waiting' and 'Grateful to Parents', fusing traditional Chinese music with modern playing techniques. Local renowned composer Ng Cheuk-yin has also created a suite, 'Deeply in Love with You', which includes well-loved songs like 'Love Forecast' and 'Stargazing'. Through the rich tonalities of Chinese instruments, the suite reveals the subtle emotions embedded in Tam's music. The concert, in its entirety, promises to showcase the multifaceted musical allure of this iconic singer through inventive rearrangements.
